Left Bower 04:14
Like a jester with no tears, like a ruler without fears, like an equalising goal at the end of extra time - lightning strikes and thunder rolls, your hands slip off the controls, when you hear rumours of war and love starts to grow cold Like the left bower in your opponent’s hand, eleventh hour, black as the night, nothing going as planned When you look up at the sky and the birds have started to fly, when the vultures gather round something lying on the ground, when you’re watching someone die and you silently stand by, when you try to raise your head and it’s buried in the sand Like the left bower in your opponent’s hand, eleventh hour, black as the night, nothing going as planned
2.
Solar Rage 04:58
While the days go rolling by see the swan begin to cry as it spreads its wing to fly While the poets wonder why see the earth ready to die as it blinds us to the sky From the one that binds us to the one that frees us from our cage something reminds us... While the fires burn inside your mind see the flames engulf those left behind As the lost seek out their solar rage Something reminds us... While the sky turns red from blue see the place the dove once flew as the world began anew While the seeds of life regrew see us darken what is true as the blackened hearts ensue
3.
25 Venoms 07:04
Eight legged, fast and agile Predatory arthropod a pair of grasping pincers held by Serket the Egyptian god Hiding under desert sands Outlined in the stars of night Sheltered in the darkness scuttling from the light Hunting near the water living in the trees able to survive in up to 100 degrees The narrow and segmented tail curving round my back crowned by the venomous stinger ready and raised for attack I am a scorpion… My poison will not fail 25 venoms… taste the whip of my tail I am a scorpion… Pincer and paralyse 25 venoms… My sting is your demise Beware of the Emperor its size affords it fame Beware the fatal Fat Tail, the ‘man killer’ is its name Beware the Arizona Bark in the desert watch it crawl Beware the Death Stalker the most lethal of them all Preferring to kill you with brute force alone but if I know I won’t succeed my fast acting venom will make you my captive I’ll gorge on you, quenching my greed Devilishly quick in pursuit of the prey a drop of your fluid is all that I need Nocturnal, under rock shadows by day emerging in the night to feed

Flying above sky scrapers and sprawling streets They seem so small I could crush them where they stand My eyes transfixed by the rivers and rolling roads They look like lines in the palm of my hand Lift your eyes Shatter counterfeit reality Our heart's disguise Tunnels and sands Contingent demands Through the passage of time Finite and fleeting History repeating/repeating/retreating/completing Through the passage of time Sailing above the misty clouds Millions of people fall under my gaze Smoothly we cruise past rough and rugged lives Nothing is hid from the sun's golden blaze Reigning above, transcendent in height and depth Before all time, those oceans of trees were known And in the end, these mountains will be made low When all eyes see the Judge seated on the throne
5.
Azaria 05:21
In the red and dry Australian desert underneath a shimmering white sun A carefree, climbing family exploring – Never knowing what would come Azaria x2 Evening falls as day dissolves to darkness Their baby lies just out of sight With a faint and fragile call she cries out as a dingo drags her into night Azaria x4 With stealth and in shadows it steals her and carries her back to its lair Her matinee jacket slips off her The last thing she sees is its stare
6.
My 7 brothers waiting, tension in the air Our starry eyes see only colour everywhere The signal’s changing as I push the pedal down 8 brothers driving out to chase the golden crown We’re riding shadows at the edge of the rainbow This spiral maze must end but where? I cannot know This is the final course, the longest path of dread The hell hounds’ chains are loosed, they’re coming straight ahead I wind and wonder “will there ever be an end?” Dodging the flying shell, I use her to defend Swerving through obstacles, I hear the engine cough But still I carry her, the barrier comes off! 3 strips of yellow and the power steering fails I jump in desperation as the cart derails My 7 brothers laugh and watch me disappear I know my time has come, my destiny is near The darkness shrouds me as I fall into the void Surely my weapons and my life will be destroyed Then in the distance is a glimmering bright light My starry eyes grow wide as land appears in sight

Nineveh 05:07
(Translation: An attacker advances against you, Nineveh. Guard the fortress, watch the road, brace yourselves, marshal all your strength! The Lord will restore the splendour of Jacob like the splendour of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have ruined their vines.) The shields of the soldiers are red; the warriors are clad in scarlet. The metal on the chariots flashes on the day they are made ready; the spears of juniper are brandished The chariots storm through the streets, rushing back and forth through the squares. They look like flaming torches; they dart about like lightning. Nineveh summons her picked troops, yet they stumble on their way. They dash to the city wall; the protective shield is put in place. The river gates are thrown open and the palace collapses. It is decreed that Nineveh be exiled and carried away. Her female slaves moan like doves and beat on their breasts. Nineveh is like a pool whose water is draining away. ‘Stop! Stop!’ they cry, but no one turns back. Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! The supply is endless, the wealth from all its treasures! She is pillaged, plundered, stripped! Hearts melt, knees give way, bodies tremble, every face grows pale. Where now is the lions’ den, the place where they fed their young, where the lion and lioness went, and the cubs, with nothing to fear? The lion killed enough for his cubs and strangled the prey for his mate, filling his lairs with the kill and his dens with the prey. "I am against you," declares the LORD Almighty, "I will burn up your chariots in smoke and the sword will devour your young lions. I will leave you no prey on the earth, the voices of your messengers will no longer be heard."

Nahum 05:54
(Selections from Nahum 3 New International Version, 2011) Woe to the city of blood full of lies Full of plunder endless prey The crack of whips the clatter of wheels See the horses gallop away Charging cavalry flashing swords Jolting chariots shining spears Piles of dead, people stumbling over the corpses For her wanton lust, she was captured and went into exile. Piles of dead, people stumbling over the corpses On every street, infants dashed into pieces Fire has consumed the bars of your gates Draw water for the siege Strengthen your defences! Work the clay, Tread the mortar, Repair the brickwork! Fire will consume you; The sword will cut you down Nothing can heal you; Your wound is fatal.

Crystal seas of perfect blue waves roll gently to the shore Endless coasts of pure white sand hide the impure core White washed tombs, corrupted hearts the Almighty Dollar’s shills, it’s all legal, never mind who it robs or kills Break your plastic chains conscience may be freed Bow to your true master Slavery to greed Cognitively dissonant as your mind and morals halve counting money without guilt while the people starve Dictators and traffickers mines of diamond and steel arms dealers and drug cartels never ending wheel. A man a plan a canal Panama
10.
Winter palace - house of Czars – revolution Mother Russia is no more – insurrection Stepping out from Georgian shadows Leading Bolsheviks to fight Abdications and arresting Flints of change start to ignite No one knew where to run, No one knew what he would become Unbreakable, unshakeable The man of steel Executions without trial, death by quota Starving peasants? Fascist spies! Flight to chaos Organised assassination of a follower and friend kill the killer you commanded so the purges never end No one knew where to run, No one knew what he would become Unbreakable, insatiable The man of Steel Adolf Hitler breaks the pact - Barbarossa! The invasion has begun - hesitation... Soviets were down 4 million, Germans up 1 thousand miles. See the Eastern Front rip open See the corpses in their piles No one knew where to run, No one knew what he would become Unbreakable, unshakeable in the Wolf's Lair 12 years later, drinking wine, poison chalice? Hypertension, haemorrhage, lying dormant... From a ruthless revolutionary to a countless murder debt Russia's Satan or her saviour? Either way we don't forget No one knew where to run, No one knew what he would become Perpetual, perennial The man of Steel
11.
Standing here before you in the corner of the room The red blood of the covenant and water of the womb With blue notes in the dead of night, we’ve reached the final day Now listen to the voice, hear what the poet has to say Empires rise and empires fall Tearing down the city wall Will it ever be built up again? Made with dignity and skill Choosing to mistrust and kill Castles burning by the hands of men We are the vanquished kingdom Unworthy in your eyes Paradox: redemption – Vanquished Kingdom, rise! Palace slaves were forced to build up bigger, more and more, They couldn’t see and soon forgot the rusted, rotted core And when we show you all our wares, you’ll have a lot to learn, With chaos to discern and evil human hearts to spurn

about

This first album by Vanquished Kingdom makes heavy metal music not only palatable but enthralling for all. It does this by combining the relentless joy, energy, depth and power of the 1980s' best fist-pumping, head-banging heavy metal stylings with a brand new, fresh and unique modern relevance in both the music and lyrics.

Newcomers to this kind of music, how should Vanquished Kingdom be listened to? Two pieces of advice:

1. Overall, remember that this music is fun and meant to bring joy, just like most music. Sometimes you get there therapeutically via intensity or anger. Enjoy having even dark reflections expressed in a powerful, pleasurable way. People who acknowledge what's wrong with the world tend to be happier. As do people who have music they can really stamp their feet to!

2. Listen to this music at times that most mirror it. In other words, this music is strong, relentless, reflective, angry, energetic. So, listen to it when you feel or need to express those things. When you're upset, at the gym, or wherever you think it could enhance what you're doing and/or how you're feeling... turn it up!

Vanquished Kingdom formed in October 2016. After performing similar sets live regularly, something of a track listing began to take shape. By April 2018, recording began. The album was finished in October 2018 - recorded, edited, mixed and mastered by Van Leucia at his studio in Canley Vale, Sydney. It represents the 11 songs Vanquished Kingdom have played live, which hadn't already been recorded and fit into the style.

The band’s motto remains, as it has been since they started, “This band is purely and only about having fun and nothing else… oh and changing the world.” They try to keep their tongue in their cheeks, filled with humour and hope even as they rail against and wail about the brokenness of humanity.

- - -

Vanquished Kingdom is an appropriate name for the band and this album as it sums up their themes. Many of this album's songs centre around the brokenness of the world across generations from many angles. Still, glimmers of hope sometimes flash through the cracks of destruction, decay and death.

The album opens with two songs about general ominous existential crises, followed by a lowly but lethal perspective of danger and death. Suddenly, it's a bird's-eye-view of the world and human history, followed by a (strangely easy-listening) whirlwind tour of chaotic glimpses of specific chaotic events:
The death by dingo of baby Azaria in 1980.
(The brief reprieve of an exhilarating fictional death-race!)
The destruction of the ancient city of Nineveh, in 612 BC.
The scandalous leak that reminded the world of the depths of human greed in 2016.
The tyrannies of Joseph Stalin and (Adolf Hitler) in 1917 and 1934-, (1941) until his death in 1953.

What could there be left do to, then, but play live music that helps to express oneself and to ask the question of humanity, "Will it ever be built up again?" The album closes in an anthemic chorus of a paradoxical redemption that means that the vanquished kingdom may rise again.

- - -

Musically, the album follows many great traits of the best of 1980s hard rock and heavy metal. The "twin-axe attack", riff-heavy tunes, compulsory guitar solo(s), galloping rhythms, much of the harmony, and emphasis on melody are all examples of this.

The songs are all in keys based on open strings of a guitar: Em (5), Am (4), Dm (1) and Bm (1). A distinctive feature is the lower vocal range of baritone, as opposed to the wailing high tenor of many 80s metal bands. While a number of sound effects come into play, there is very little added to the core, raw, pure sounds of the vocals, guitars and drums.
