about
Left Bower is about the ominous, foreboding and unexpected.
In the card game '500', the 'left bower' is the Jack of a different suit but the same colour as the trump suit. It is almost like a double agent. If your team doesn't have it, they could be in trouble.
The song does include multiple references to the ominous, foreboding and unexpected:
-"jester with no tears" is a quote from Iron Maiden's 'El Dorado', a song about con artists.
-world leaders/conquerors whose lack of moral awareness results in great suffering.
-Asian Cup Final 2015
-Biblical insights on the end of the world
-The Breaking Bad scene in which Walter watches Jane choke to death, deliberately choosing not to help her.
Musically, this song is a 12/8 metallic rocker whose opening and closing riff is based on playing an open string and hammering on an octave higher. This technique is also used in parts of the guitar solo.
There is a small "Easter egg" in this song. When the vocals were recorded, lead singer, Zac Anderson, whistled along to the end of the interlude riff after the second chorus. This whistle was kept in the track and can be heard immediately preceding the guitar solo.
lyrics
Like a jester with no tears, like a ruler without fears,
like an equalising goal at the end of extra time -
lightning strikes and thunder rolls, your hands slip off the controls,
when you hear rumours of war and love starts to grow cold
Like the left bower in your opponent’s hand,
eleventh hour, black as the night, nothing going as planned
When you look up at the sky and the birds have started to fly,
when the vultures gather round something lying on the ground,
when you’re watching someone die and you silently stand by,
when you try to raise your head and it’s buried in the sand
Like the left bower in your opponent’s hand,
eleventh hour, black as the night, nothing going as planned
