Passage of Time is about having a Godlike view of the world and history.

The words were written between Sydney, Australia, and a nearby town to the west, via the "Blue Mountains" on a regional aeroplane. The plane's altitude remained just low enough that it was possible for the passengers to see the ground, but so high that everything could be seen with great perspective.

The song suggests that humans tend to forget the scope of time and their seeming insignificance in the world, and need to travel through the passage of time with a true perspective.

Musically, in the choruses, a change in time signature to 3-4 mirrors the nature of the lyrics.
